TRACEABILITY & EDUCATION

We educate our employees, customers, suppliers, and other key stakeholders about sustainable seafood, including the importance of addressing environmental and social issues and working towards full traceability. Southwind Foods / Great American Seafood Imports Co. has partnered with Trace Register to ensure our imported and domestic seafood meets all regulatory and customer sustainability, traceability, and food safety requirements.

WILD-CAUGHT SEAFOOD PRACTICES

Millions of pounds of our wild-caught seafood is purchased from suppliers and fisheries that are Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified and often from comprehensive Fishery Improvements Projects (FIP) that are working towards full MSC certifications.

We also support small scale fisheries by purchasing Fair Trade Seafood because knowing where our seafood comes from and the people involved in the process is important to us.

Our U.S. family owned and operated seafood company  takes great pride in knowing our actions contribute to ensuring future generations can enjoy wild-caught seafood from healthy oceans by helping conserve marine ecosystems and protect the livelihoods of millions of people who depend on them.

FARM-RAISED SEAFOOD PRACTICES

Our commitment does not stop with wild-caught seafood. We purchase millions of pounds of farm-raised seafood that is certified by Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC).  By sourcing BAP and ASC certified farm-raised seafood, trusted and proven third party aquaculture certification programs, we take pride that our farm-raised seafood products come from environmentally, socially, and economically responsible facilities.

PARTNERSHIPS

We are active members of National Fisheries Institute (NFI), Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA), Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI), and Better Seafood Board (BSB).  All of these organizations work hand and hand to promote responsible seafood practices through education, advocacy, and demonstration. As the BSB states, “being honest with customers is the only way to promote and maintain confidence in seafood products” and we couldn’t agree more.
